Warbirds Downunder 2015

Nigel was lucky enough to be invited to fly Grey Nurse MK VIII which carries the markings of Wing Commander R.H (Bobby) Gibbes OAM DSO DFC at Warbirds Downunder 2015 last week.

"My thanks to all at Temora Aviation Museum for allowing me to fly Grey Nurse (TAM's Spitfire MK Vlll) in this year's Warbirds Downunder airshow. Friday's blistering 40deg C and strong cross winds made for some tough decisions for the evening show and we had to cancel one warbird scenario but the second in a more favourable wind conditions went ahead. TAM's spray bar modification to both the Vlll and XVl Spitfires made it possible to get to and from the runway without over temping the engines . . what a fantastic innovation which gives the pilot about 7 mins of water available to spray directly into each underwing radiator. It was such a pleasure to see the temps dropping on taxi back rather than the usual steady climb which, in anything above moderate ambient temperatures, has you wondering whether or not you'll make it back to the ramp!
Saturday was a fantastic day with a huge crowd and perfect weather. The diversity of aircraft and teams from all over Australia made for an excellent flying programme. What a privilege it was to be a participant! Thank you all." Photo above of Matt Hall and Nigel flying in formation ahead of the airshow, photo taken by Fletcher McKenzie
